The Cost-Cutting Antihero - Goals and Values

(For those just tuning in, this email is part of a multi-day series we're doing on Cost-Cutting. Check out the first postif you want to start from the beginning!)

Now, you might be wondering,

Why are we wasting time reviewing overarching goals and values when we should be focused on cost-cutting?

In other words, you might be thinking,

“Show me the money!”

But here’s why, after building some momentum with quick wins, we need to slow down and talk about goals & values:

Cost cutting isn’t typically about finding hidden savings with no downsides

It’s about making tough calls

It’s about deciding what you really should be doing with your money

Where you should you be spending

And where you should be saving.

So, we have to look at Goals and Values:

  • Goals tell us what we should be investing in

  • Values tell us what guidelines we’ll follow to get there

Before you decide what to cut

Decide:

  1. What you want, and

  2. What you will and won’t do.

Your homework assignment today:

  • Write down your top 1-3 goals for the next 3 months, 12 months, and 5 years

  • Write down the 5 company values that guide how you operate

Once you're done, hit reply and let me know how it went!

Tomorrow, we'll translate these into effective spending.
