How to Set Team Goals at a Startup
Every startup needs goals.
But how do you set goals and achievement metrics for your team
When things are changing so quickly?
How do you operate in an environment
Where everything your team tries to execute feels like more of a guess than a straight line path to completion?
Answer: Embrace it.
This is how things work at growing companies.
Do this by separating North Star Goals (the high-level things your team has to achieve)
Eg. Sales numbers, customer leads, email signups, etc
From the projects or Tactics you'll undertake to try to achieve those goals
Eg. Run a particular ad campaign, host an event to get signups, go after a new market, etc.
Goals stay as still and steady as possible.
Tactics get tried but then abandoned as soon as the data shows they're not working out.
If your team is having trouble focusing on what matters,
Or you're struggling to hold them accountable to certain metrics,
Ask yourself:
What are my Goals?
What are my Tactics?
How am I measuring each?
And given the context, am I responding correctly when we're off-target?
