Getting "Featurized"

Today, I was working with a startup

That's building a companion app to another existing software tool.

They're leveraging some exciting AI

To build out a capability that users have been craving for years.

Here’s the thing:

The pain point is there,

The customer demand is there,

And this company has the know-how to build it.

So, what’s the issue?

It’s this: The second their tool gains traction and proves valuable ($$$),

What’s to stop the existing software company

From rolling out this feature themselves

And snatching this startup’s lunch?

Call it, "Getting featurized."

Even if you’re not building a companion tool for a big player’s software,

This is always something to consider.

Before you invest time in building a solution everyone’s hungry for,

It helps to remember,

You're probably not the only person who could build this,

And in fact, bigger companies will probably be able to build it better and faster.

So, what will you do to prevent it?

You don't have to do it now

(Not before you have any lunch to steal)

But you’d better have a plan to guard your meal

Before the opportunity

Starts to look too tasty.
