Don't ask an accountant.
The worst thing you can do if you need business strategy advice
Is to ask an accountant.
I hear about this all the time,
“My business was in trouble so I asked my accountant for advice,
But they didn’t tell me anything useful!
They just spouted off a bunch of business jargon!
This is why I hate finance; it’s totally useless.”
No, it’s not.
Finance isn’t useless.
It’s just annoying.
Accounting is built to accurately record business activities, not drive them.
Accountants are trained to measure businesses, not run them.
Accountants have little in common with most entrepreneurs:
They are generally very risk-averse
Their vocational focus is very deep and narrow
They LOVE rules and getting in the weeds
They require very little context on the business strategy
So if you need help and want some advice,
Ask yourself:
Do I need help measuring my business? Or do I need help running it?
Measuring: Ask an accountant
Running: Ask a CFO.
