Who Owns the Mission?

“Mission, Vision, and Values is a branding exercise!”

“No, it’s a strategy core strategy exercise!”

“No, it’s HR’s responsibility!”

^An actual argument that took place in my group of startup consultant friends

It was a heated one!

Every month, I meet with a group of fractional startup leaders across the functional spectrum

COO, CMO, CFO, CoS, and all of us CEOs of our own businesses.

So why did this group of experts get so passionate about something so seemingly silly?

I think it’s because of this:

Mission, Vision, and Values is one of the most magic starting points for finding identify of a startup

It helps with SO many areas in the business, that it’s hard to pinpoint which department even owns it:

  • It helps align your team

  • It helps attract your target customers

  • It helps identify your hero metrics

  • It helps you focus

  • It helps connect your present execution to your future strategy

  • It helps clarify goals

The truth is, all of us - CFO, CMO, CoS, CEO - want a clear Mission, Vision, and Values

It doesn’t matter who owns it

As long as your startup

Gets it done.
