Some other jerk - The Friday Finance Break
The Friday Finance Break
(For anyone just tuning in, every Friday we take a break from the CFO content and talk about founder mental health. If you're just here for the CFO stuff, we'll see you Monday!)
I recently caught up with a business school friend who is having a tough time at work.
They had been hired as part of the C-Suite of an exciting startup,
And were loving the business challenges they were solving,
And were convinced that this company was definitely a future unicorn,
But the work wasn't sitting right with them.
Why?
Because they didn't feel aligned with the values of the CEO,
And they didn't feel good about helping him win.
Here's the thing:
Sometimes, being a founder can be challenging.
But it has one massive advantage over other careers:
Your talents are used to pursue YOUR dreams, not someone else's.
It's your butt on the line,
But it's also your mission that wins when you succeed.
So, anytime you're feeling down on the CEO seat,
Maybe remind yourself:
Most jobs suck sometimes.
But at least when yours sucks,
It's in service of YOU,
And the things YOU care about,
And not at the pleasure of some other jerk. :)
