Nerd Sniped

As a founder, my biggest challenge MAY be my insufferable propensity to be Nerd Sniped.

Anyone else?

Okay, let me explain…

First off, if you don’t know what Nerd Sniping is, it's from XKCD:

Nerd Sniping = When you give a Nerd a very juicy problem to solve and it renders her/him/them completely unable to pay attention to anything else… including lethal danger.

Here’s the thing:

As a founder, I am a NERD about my business.

  • If someone asks me a question about my business, my brain gets sniped

  • If someone presents a problem about my business, sniped

  • If someone literally mentions my business, SNIPED!

I will swing all my attention to them.

Even if a bus is about to plow me down.

As a startup expert, it’s even worse:

LinkedIn is a Nerd Sniping minefield for me.

“Oh look, this person forgot this funding option, let me remind them!”

“Oh hey, this startup should tweak their positioning… Gotta let them know!”

“Oh man… If I just spend 20 more minutes rewording this post 17 times, I bet it’s REALLY going to help someone!”

Intro calls are also a challenge.

“Hmmm this new person’s problem is so interesting! Let me think about potential solutions for 12. Hours. Straight.”

As are dinner parties.

“So you might THINK the startup market is illogical Larry, but really, it’s all about incentives! Let me waste all my energy explaining this to you!”

Nerd Sniping abounds, and it is exhausting.

Founders and experts… Anyone else struggle with this?

How do you keep your Nerd Sniping at bay?
