Modeling Magic
Tonight, I just wrapped up teaching my Startup Financial Modeling course for NYU students in the Berkley Center of Entrepreneurship Venture Challenge Spring '24 cohort.
I teach this course every semester, and it's always such a great time.
Most of the students come with a plan to fundraise in the next year, but most don't have a financial model ready yet.
During the course, I show them how to build a model
But not just any model.
I don't just share a template that they follow
(In fact, I dissuade them from using templates).
No.
I show them the step-by-step process of:
Understanding every moving part of their business
Translating those parts into math
Using free online resources to create a model that THEY understand and will love using.
The course is 2 hours, extremely tactical, and leaves founders with all the tools they need to complete a model 100% on their own.
But here's my favorite part:
Learning how to build the financial model of your business is really the moment when you fully understand how your business works.
If you're still in the idea stage, it's the first time you get to "run" your business.
If you're already growing your startup, it's your time machine into your future company.
It's the first moment you get to be
The CEO you're about to be.
It's why I'm such a fanatic about founders building their own models.
Because building a good model
Is pure magic.✨
